Subway

You may not think much of it, it's kind of the same old store that you've always been to growing up but let's take another look at the sandwich shop that we all know.

Subway is not the restaurant that we frequent to hang out with our friends nor get really excited about when we go on a date but are glad we did after we get our food. Now why do we feel this way and what makes this place so popular that Rexburg has 3 of them?  Well that can mostly be answered by 2 guys, Fred and Jared, and the community.

According to subway.com, in 1965 Fred DeLuca started a sub sandwich shop, with some financial backing from  his friend, to pay his way for medical school. Almost 10 years later, they owned and operated 16 stores. Then, they decided to franchise. DeLuca is still CEO of the company.

Now the reason we feel so good after buying our fresh meal is the same reason a kid from a college in Indiana lost 245lbs. with his steady diet of a 6in. sub for lunch and a foot long for dinner. Jared Fogel was in his 20's when he lost half of himself. His roommate reporter wrote about his transformation for the school paper and Men's Health picked up the story. Then Subway got a hold of him and Jared hasn't looked back.

That's what I like about this place. It's got two things. First, it genuinely wants to be a healthy and tasty spot for people to eat. Everything from their store front to their napkins boasts low calories and high nutrients for the health minded. Even their website offers advice from personal trainers, dietitians and nutrition specialists to help everyone live a little bit healthier, which brings me to reason number two.
Subway is also really good at getting involved in the community -just watch Undercover Boss on CBS. They sponsor multiple organizations from breast cancer, little league baseball, foundations for higher education as well as education on obesity, to an entire company wide decision on where money should be donated next.

Sure the place may not be a venue for the college kids to hang out in but with food that is affordable, healthy, made your way and with a company that wants to help the community and actually does a good job at it it makes sense why Rexburg has three of them and they all keep in business.
