Great Harvest Bread Company

I love being involved in the community and seeing a small town get together and feeling that spirit of fellowship, love and well community. That's what theaters used to be, a place where the entire community could get together and enjoy a movie and spend time with each other. To me that's what Great Harvest Bread Company represents. In fact that is what their philosophy is on their web site: "Let's create unique neighborhood bakeries that are a reflection of the Great Harvest brand and the bakery owner."

I went there the other morning during finals week with a friend, we needed some breakfast to help us through our afternoon finals. Going in the restaurant feels like going home because everything is inviting from the artwork, the furniture, the hand drawn chalk menu but especially the people. The man behind the counter, whom I later found out to be the manager, asked if we would like a free sample I replied, "What do you have?". To which he replied "Well today I made..." and then he told us the flavors. But that's what got me: The fact that a local guy from Rexburg can own his own restaurant and decides what he wants to bake when and the corporate company just helps him along his path, giving him advice and recipes along the way. Any company that helps the community become more rich in it's own individuality will get my business.

With samples and condiments the size the ginger bread man's house, fresh loaves of bread daily with different baked goods such as scones with fruit and cinnamon rolls Great Harvest will become a more regular stop on my route.

Date Ideas: When you go on those "walking dates" that are just meant to give her a teaser of what a real date will be like. Wow 'em with coming here and getting a free sample and maybe a small loaf of bread before you return her to her homework where all she'll do is dream about date 2.

Original Thai

The first place on my list was Original Thai. Located on the south side of main street right across from Wells Fargo Bank and the Sprint store, it is a small, long restaurant with occupancy only at 50.

Walking in makes you feel as if you are entering one of the many side stores in downtown Bangkok (not that I've been there before but in my minds eye that's what is looks like) but the whimsical greeting cards with american painters of light houses brings you back to the reality that this is just a foreign restaurant trying to Americanize itself.

They seat you, give you the menu with all the dishes names in Thai (and English translations in parenthesis). Thai food is known for it's spiciness as well as aromatic features and the smells defiantly yielded itself to these. I asked the waitress for suggestions and she gave me the most popular Pod Thai. When it comes out it looks like a bland american form of pasta. But when eating these vermicelli looking noodles I get a rush of flavor that is sweet and savory!

Over all I like it. I want to go back, get some curry and try all of their dishes because the first one made a good impact.

Date Ideas: Take an adventurous one who likes to try new things.

The Plan

It's a natural fact that everyone loves eating. We gather around it with our families, we make it with our friends and we even share it in the restaurants with those whom we try avoid in the super market. Heck, we even pray over this stuff. It is one of the few things that is good for us and we enjoy doing.

There is also a whole world out there for us to explore. There are people to meet, places to see and paradigms to view them all through. We can learn so much from others, all we need to do is look around. If this is all we have to do to start, why not focus first on what is right in front of us?

Thus the reason for this blog is not only to fill our bellies but realize the diversity of restaurants (and give a small review on them) even here in little ole Rexburg. Then maybe we'll go bigger.
